I suppose that's true, to a point. AS ALRA # 112, I have attended more than a few juried events, with admission based simply on my ALRA membership.

While ALRA members do often discuss the authenticity of various items of clothing and equipment, we are of a like mind to get it as right as possible.

A coupla members have rifles with wrought iron, forge welded barrels and forged locks. Most have barrels and hardware made of modern materials. Those that do have totally PC guns don't deride those of us who don't.

One member has a completely hand loomed and hand sewn hunting shirt...that is only worn where it won't get torn up too badly.

He doesn't deride anyone wearing machine sewn clothing.

There is a process to challenge an items authenticity. In the event that a particular item of someone's gear is challenged, they have the opportunity to produce the documentation, or stop using that item until documentation is found. There are several items on the banned manifest that have since been documented. Those items are now allowed.

IMHO, groups like the ALRA are all about learning and growing in the sport, rather than simply being a member of an elite organization.

There is a LOT of camaraderie in the ALRA. Lots, and it shows in the friendships I have made with people from all over the country. It shows in the events I have had the pleasure to attend while associated with a local group, acting as host to those of us from out of state.

While I am no longer active, those connections and and learning experiences have affected me in a way that few others have.

IMHO, joining any organization depends on what one wants out of his membership. If all you want is to hang out in old timey looking cloths, camp in old timey looking tents, and shoot old timey looking guns, that's great.

If one wants to learn the old ways, ya gotta hang out with those who do know the old ways...or at least have the motivation to learn the old ways for themselves.

God bless
