Smoke and Fire has a pattern for "military overalls" (see below). Would these be proper for a pre-1840 western mountain man. Are these like what are seen in a lot of millers paintings? Could these work with some altering for a Mountain Man of the early 1830's?
Does anyone know of a better pattern? Thanks, I'm trying to figure out an outfit and I don't want to waste my braintan. Stock #: SF-203 Military Overalls Pattern Revolutionary War overalls. Instructions included for proper fit. Broadfall front. Contains sizes 30-48. http://www.smoke-fire.com/smok...-fire-patterns-1.asp |

smokjmpr1,
Welcome, I see this is your first post. I have no info for you, as I do a Colonial impression Allow me to introduce myself. I use plain drop fall breeches I get from Ft. Downing Trading Company. Other patterns and other vendors have fine ones, too, I'm sure. That said, do I guess right that you are a Smokejumper, i.e. wildland firefire aerial delivery via parachute? This was wildland fire season 37 for me just passed. Have been on engine crews, done aerial observation, helitack crews, helicopter rappell crew (trained at North Cascades Smokejumper base when TAR was there). Since '85 I have been an information officer...sure helps to have an info officer that is intimately familiar with the operations side of fire. You can reach me offline if you so desire by following my name back to the profile, which has my email address. Sparks "I thought when you said you chased tornadoes it was just a metaphor." Soon to be Ex fiance in Twister. |

Nope you want the later narrow fall style:
Kannik's corner sells the correct pants and shirt pattern here...(don't worry about the dates they are the correct style for the 1830's) http://kannikskorner.com/patmen2.htm or you can get them from Smoke & Fire if you prefer: http://www.smoke-fire.com/19th...-mens-patterns-1.asp #Stock #: P-008 Also one of the best articles on Mtn Man Clothing of the 1830's is in the Book of Buckskinning #7 published by our hosts Muzzleloader aka Chuck Burrows |

That pattern looks good. It says "It includes directions for making closer fitted legs...."
So would this pattern with fitted legs work for what's shown on Pg. 97 of "Tailor Made & Trail Worn" as the "Military Overalls" circa 1803? I also saw from "The Sketchbook of the Western Fur Trade, where most of Millers paintings show "Pants" with fitted legs and a strap under the instep. Thanks for the link. Ew |

Thanks for asking the question, smokjumpr1, I've been thinking about updating my outfit to make it more historically correct.
