I have been reading and researching to make a capote but im wondering if yall could show me some pics of yalls capotes. Im real interested in making one but I get all confused when so many people say so many different styles are right or wrong. Thank yall for yalls help.
Well Chance this could prove to be another one of those lively topics. Lets be good now.
First is how PC do you want to be? Also the who, what, when, were of your persona would help answer your question better. That way we don't git you cornfused.
Mine is a tailored Canadian style for the 1830's. It is made of a tight boiled wool material. Its new for me this past spring I like it.
Here's mine- see attachment- in the sunlight it is the same color as Bufflerub 1880, the main difference is I have a shirt type collar rather than a hood. Miller shows both styles. Mine has no buttons, a belt keeps it closed in mild weather and in cold weather I use a black silk handkerchief under the collar, knotted in front, that along with the thongs/straps of horn and bag keep it closed without buttons. The lack of buttons I think is best as the straps and thongs otherwise catch on said buttons. You'll also need a gussett under sleeve. This can be a sewn in diamond shape or integral. I did an integral style. James Hanson shows this in his Mountain Man Sketch Book.
Hey guys those are great thanks for the pics. I am a Tennessee pre 1840. Im just starting and found a 100% wool blanket(60x55) red with black wide stripe. Got it for $3 so was wondering if that would be ok I dont want a hood. I think yalls are great. Man there is alot to learn. Im going to my first rondy this next week. Gonna try and camp for a week. Im slowly getting my stuff together. Please keep the help coming.
If it has a stripe, surf the net for instructions but there is a definite way you cut the parts. The bottom of the Capote has a stripe and then half the sleeve near the shoulder has a stripe and half the sleeve near the cuff has a stripe. I'm working from memory but that pattern I believe is very simple, sort of a glorified wrap around. Takes just a couple of hours to sew up.
