Grey Wolf,
Now those are some great images, where did you come up with them? This is the kind of stuff we need to see more of, it sure helps a person get some good ideas from the real deal. I know its given me a different direction for my new buckskin coat. I have the hides I just need a plan.

To all who took the time to post the pictures thank you. They are fantastic references for me. I would like to stich up one of these with fur lined collar, cape and cuffs myself.

Anyone else notice that Col Dodge has a left hand rifle in his painting? NWTF that is a great painting you posted. You've got all of the good's!

I got them from some books and also various internet sites - some museum and some auction....

Here is an article about Shawn Webster, who made a Metis coat for David Wright. I doubt they are cheap... but definitely beautiful.

I had "FLYING GOOSE TRADERS" make me a rendezvous coat. It took four full size brain tanned elk hides at about $10 a square foot
(1990 money). I had some bead work on the shoulders and on all the seams with a floral
porky quill design on the back. Pierced sleeves. Really nice. Friendship price,
$1200.00. I was strutting around a Western
looking dapper in my new coat. A horseman
came by and said he saw the coat being made
and wanted it. He bought it off my back
for a tidy profit for me and rode away.
When I see him now at rendezvous he's always
wearing the coat. I'd like to have it but
at the time needed $1500.00 more.
Good work is NOT CHEAP! I don't think
Flying Goose is in business or called something
else. They are perhaps the most handsome
male garment in the world. Art.

Did you notice Dodge's hat, flat on top. The painting of Fort McKenzie by Bodmer, the men behind the pickets have similar hats.

The watercolor of Dodge is 1834, by Catlin. But the color was done by Rich W, c. 2007. LOL!

All the early hats were flat on top, unless you believe the catalogs instead of art and originals. LOL! #2

Great pics CB!

Yep Rich "colorized? that one based on other Catlin's - thanks for the reminder...

With respect - not all early hats were flat topped though - A.J. Miller shows plenty of rounded tops such as this one on Ole Bill Burrows..

There are also extant hats of the period with rounded domes.....
