I decided to go with Buckskin Pants instead of Leggins.

I just ordered the Pants, belt, patch knife and Bear Claw Necklace (carved from bone) from Tecumseh's Trading Post in Cody, Wyoming.

Anyone own stuff from Tecumseh's?

You will be happier with the pants.
When I was stationed in Germany I came
in contact with Mountain Man reinactors
all over the country. One "BIg Bear" trader
out of Frankfurt was selling top quality
smoked brain tanned red dear buckskin.
I bought one full hide and could not get my pattern to fit. I swallowed my gum and ended
up paying $280.00 for two hides. I have been
wearing those pants since 1990 and could not be
happier. Except for a little "patina" they shine.

With wool leggins and clout and a long shirt, weskit and light wrap coat/frock to the knee you can stay pretty warm it only gets down to the lower 20's here as a rule and this out fit is comfortable, above freezing on a sunny day and I shed the light wrap coat/frock and tie it to my haversack strap. I have a couple of pairs of leather leggins that I sometimes wear if it is dry, and I am in wild rose/thistle country but I don't like leather in wet weather unless it was BT.

yes wool is a lot more comfortable in wet rainy weather while huntin. and i have a capote like shirt, that hangs down to my knees and the thing is hot. it is as thick as a capote but it ties at the neck and it slips over. i just sewed on a hood today along with some wool fringe to the hood and wrist cuffs.

I made my own skins from deer hides. Tear apart an old pair of jeans for a pattern. Cut the leather smaller because it'll stretch.

These are stained from the grease of many cook fires.

Here's the shirt and pants together. They're not hard to make...if I can do it anyone can.

I haven't purchased anything from them, but I've been to their store in Cody. Their items appeared to be well constructed as I remember, but at that time I had spent all my money at several different rendezvous I had attended around there and couldn't buy anything...well, I could have, but then I wouldn't have had any money for gas to make the last 400 miles of my trip back home.

I too usually wear a breechclout and leggings. I've been in thigh high snow in 20 degree temps, for days on end, always stayed perfectly comfortable....well, at least as comfortable as i would have been in pants. Taking my cue from Osbourne Russell, I wrap my feet in wool blanketing strips. Then i wear a double moccasin, wool legging, wool breech cloth, a cotton and a wool shirt. That's enough for the day time if your moving around. Night time a wool robe, or a capote would help.

Hey, how about that bow shot by NWTF Longhunter, that's good shooting with a traditional bow. No one reads Beckwourth any more because he gets labeled a big liar but the book is actually pretty good. He mentions some mountain men picked up and carried bows and arrows from killed Indians because it was a "rapid fire" defense tool in case of an Indian attack that was an all out charge.
Notice the long fringe, that's the length I've always read is pc.
Modern underwear is not pc has far as I know so you either go without under your buck skin pants or wear a breech clout and leggings. That I haven't yet done but I'm strongly considering the change. The Indians always laughed at the idea the breech clout was cold in the winter, Indians would argue you go around with your face uncovered, what's the big deal about the hip area.
I have often wondered why the buffalo robe over the saddles, seems pretty common. It would make sense if a lot of mountain men worn clouts. On a trek, it make be actually a better option as you could carry an extra and wash them out from time to time.
