I was shooting my 20 bore fowler the other afternoon and noticed my stock was pulled away from the barrel at the muzzle. The forward barrel lug broke free from the barrel and was still pinned in the stock. How do I re solder it back to the barrel and make sure the pin holes line up? Can it be epoxyed back on or should I just buy a new lug and solder it on and try to re drill a new hole?

You can re-solder the lug you have back in-place but you can count on re-drilling or at least enlarging the hole for the pin. Apparently that pin needed a little slack anyway.

Must be the times!!!! I unsrewed the nipple on my rifle while doing a deep clean, the clean out screw was to tight to take out.Nipple didnt look just right so I looked closer,The threads on the nipple and on further inspection the drum were both worn.I dont take it out every cleaning, looks like it just wore with use and time.Local Smith, makes his own BP rifles, says he can make it right.Feel lucky to find it before I shot it again and had the nipple blow out!!!!!That could spoil the day!#!#

My fowler was assembled by a friend and he used jbweld for the lugs and the front sight. about the second time I shot it, the front sight fell off and the barrel lugs came off. I had them all soldered back on and yes, the smith had to re-drill the pin hole. It has been a perfect shooter ever since--wish I was!

AxelP, I wish I had read your post before I spent $7 on a tube of jb weld!! Thought I was being smart. I guess I can try to solder it back on myself. I usually like to try to fix stuff before I send it flying across the yard at high velocity followed by a string of profanity learned in the Navy then take it to a professional.

JB weld for lugs? Eeek... Try this stuff:
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx...8_oz__Swif_95_Solder Its a really strong paste solder with flux that is super easy to use. Clean and fit the pieces together. Take a piece of broken hacksaw blade and bend into a dogleg such that one end lays on the barrel and when pressed down the other holds the lug in place like a clamp. Wire your clamp down on the barrel. Apply solder to both sides and heat with a propane or mapp torch until the paste liquefies around the edges. Remove heat, cool, clean up and you're done. Sean |
