Sent my Jackie Brown smoothbore out to Charles Keiffer for repair after repeated frustrations with the locktime and inconsistent ignition (interpretration: dang thing wouldn't fire). Some of you probably read my posts on this issue some time back. Mr. Keiffer reworked the breech plug and installed a white lightening touch hole liner. I've had the gun back for about 3 weeks now and must say, he did a fine job!
Having gotten a Hare with this ol smoothy I've been working my Basset's Blossom (aka: Ground and Pound) and Lily (aka: Search and Destroy) every weekend in the early morning hours. They work great as a team. Drop the talegate and Lily goes off full tilt trying to catch a scent on the wind. Blossom will get out, put her nose to the ground and just start grunting it out sure but slow. Best huntin hounds I ever owned (only ones too)! Whichever one strikes first, the other will join in.
Yesterday it was raining and wet, my flashpan ended up having black goopy muck in it and I couldn't touch her off before going home. Never got a shot at a bunny anyway so I wasn't to concerned, we still had a ball.
This morning, I run the pick through the flash hole (I cleaned up the flash pan once I got home) and the powder inside was still crunchy which I took to be a good sign.
The dogs opened up and the chase was on. The rabbit come busting out into the open, I had time for a quick but unhurried shot. Pulled the trigger and nothing, misfire. I figured the powder in the pan probably got damp as it seems to pretty quickly so I dumped it and put a fresh charge in the pan.
To my unbridled surprise, the rabbit popped out into the pathway and stopped right in the middle of the path not 25 yds from me. I had all day to shoot this bunny. I took careful aim placing that turtle sight right on the bunny and pulled the trigger, nothing another misfire. What's going on here?
The dogs are in hot pursuit and the only thing I can think is either the powder in the barrel is wet or the flint is shot. Since I wasn't carrying my possibles bag, I ran back to the vehicle and replaced the flint. Hounds that they are, they continued to pound that bunny while I was messin with my gun.
Unfortunately, the bunny got away and I didn't get another crack at it. I wasn't about to find out the hard way that the powder inside is wet and it wasn't the flint so I touched her off and my ears were met with an instant boom. Boy, this gun fires nice now, too bad it didn't when I needed it too. After another fine run, but no shooting opportunity we headed home with blood on the tips of their tails and a longing for the couch. Dogs are beat and we had a great time, that bunny will be there for the next time, and that's why we call it huntin and not killing. Question, with the flint getting wet, will it prevent it from working the next day? Also, anyone know a good way (interpretation: easy) to sharpen these flints? I'm quickly building up a half a peck of bad flints. May your next hunt be a good one!

Kaptag,
Do you mean to say that you had no flash in the pan, or that the flash did not ignite the charge in the barrel? Two different issues, of course. Either way, a clean-up and a fresh start ought to help.

No flash in the pan, replacing the flint corrected the issue.
