The Barrows Squeal Prelude to Revolution Spring……Such a glorious time of year! What, with the awakening of the woodland flowers, the bursting forth of the bright green leaves on trees that had slumbered through a cold, dreary winter, birds chirping happily, flitting about in search of freshly hatched insects, could spoil such a beautiful, sun filled day…...especially after a weeks worth of sorely needed……rain ? MUD……that’s what……not to mention the rough ruts, embedded stumps, and cattle excrement mixed in with that……MUD……which infested this rude byway so casually referred to as the Kings Road. God preserve the lowly traveler! Such were the thoughts of William Barrington as he sat his horse and surveyed, with his one good eye, this so called, road stretching out before him. This trip from Philadelphia to Richmond had taken on a sinister air long before he had even embarked on it, and the present travel conditions did not relieve the foreboding. These Colonials were being troublesome to the Crown in more ways than one, and it was his assignment to gather what the feelings of the country folk had, and which side they would align, should hostilities escalate in the near future. The next roadhouse was five miles beyond the Pennsylvania-Virginia colonies border, having already traversed 20 miles of slop, the opportunity of a hot meal, warm accommodations, and inquiring conversation weighed lightly on his mind, as he let his horse pick its way. The forest is a wilderness only to those that fear it, silent only to those that hear nothing. The forest is a friend to those that dwell within its' nature and it is filled with the sounds of life to those that listen. | ||
