Afta a while th gent let me pap taak th gun huntin fer wha we call in this part of th counry as groundhogs er whistle pigs er field pigs . Whaal , me pap say th he shota rite big buncha thm critters with tha Fleeger and I guess it didst a gud job of it fer him . Aftr sum years ths ol gent movd ta 'othr State an tuk th Fleger with him naturly . One day he say ta me pap tha sum day Imma gion ta giv ths Fleeger ta ya . I guess tha pap thought it wast idle chattr at th tyme an went on with life .

Th l fingerjoints ar naawt acnin so much an thout tha I mite mebbe finish th tale .....Th Old gent tha had th Fleeger mov'd frm Pennsyvany an went with the Flee ger ta sumwere in th Mid States . Whilst ther he starts a truckin compny .....a long tyme latr me pap wast workin at his station an a big truck wth 18 wheels , rattlin , an belchen deisel fuel smok pulls inta his small parkin lot , shuts off th motor an say ta "filler up "...an me pap didst tha . The driver jumps outa th truck with a blanket wrappd 'round sumthin skinny an long with a note written on paper taped to it ,...an hands it all ta me pap . It seems tha th ol gent with th Fleeger had telled his Missus tha in his end tha he wanted ta mak sur tha th Fleeger wast givn ta me pap . Th Missus one day giv th Fleeger ta a truck drivr gion East an giv him instrucshuns fer me pap . Me pap wast without th words an humbly took th package . Yur rite in guessin tha it wast th Fleeger !! Don kno how long it wast since th Ol Gent say ta me pap 'bout givn him th Fleeger sum day , butt tha was wha happend . An th Missus memberd wha th Ol Gent said an done it . Me pap had th Fleeger fer quite sum tyme an wen he wast endin he gives it ta me , an this Old Goat will giv it ta me son......with th story .

Thas th tale of th Fleeger an how I cums ta hav it , an kno tha I wast th minor player in ths tale . Amazin ta me at tymes how things turn ta be . Th gent wast sur ta th words he spok ta me pap so long befor .

Just googled Fleeger PA gunsmith. He made his guns in Alegheny City, which is now part of Pittsburgh. I found a picture of a Fleeger percussion rifle, a cap lock. Thanks for the story Rupe.

Bud - Thanks . I have a book on long rifles of Western PA . There is a section no Fleeger . He was a builder of many longrifles for many years and trained many apprentice gun makers ito the fi ld . It seems that I have a piece of history in my possesion .

Rupe,it sure seems like you do.There are many very skilled gunsmiths that share our interest.I would just write to one of the better ones, and ask them if they feel up to it,if not ask for a recommendation....I can't imagine any of the really good ones not at least being interested..

John - Currently I'm in Meadville . Due to some health issue I had to sell my home and move . My wife and I lived in a cedar log home on 50 wooded acres that we had built 22 years ago near Townville . It's been quite an adjustmeebt which I'm not making well . Miss the woods .
