Today was the first snowfall of the Autumn, Winter Season, AND....

I SAW MY FIRST SNOW BIRD TODAY.....except it was a hand gesture out my driver's side window, from me to the IDIOT who blasted past me while passing me in the snow on the wrong side of a double yellow line....., So...., sorry all you bird lovers, mine was the wrong kind of "bird"...

Eeker

No shortage of idiots here in the People's Repbulic, huh Dave? They seem to be growing in numbers down here on the Shore as well...

Yeah, I mean I understand that in the craptastic road conditions I keep to the right on multi-lane roads, and I understand that if a fellow made a mistake on a single lane road, and went down the shoulder OR crossed over with no on-coming traffic to avoid smashing the rear end of my car..., OK well-done in not hurting me, and I'd leave a gap so the person could come back into the traffic lane, BUT...we were even going a tad up-hill, and this guy in a Land Rover simply thought I was going too slow, so whipped around me for the advantage of being...ONE CAR ahead of me at the next light?

Lol, it's not restricted to that side of the Continent. I had to foray down into Commiefornia a few weeks ago, to see grandkids..... Let's just say that particular bird is well established on the West Coast.

I'm not calling you out, Dave. It sounds like you were in the right. But, maybe the guy had a pregnant wife lying on the back seat and they were in a rush to get to the hospital. Or, maybe there was some other emergency. Probably not, but maybe.

To quote an old police sergeant that I knew; "Anyone who drives faster than me is a maniac. Anyone who drives slower than me is an idiot."

I think in certain circumstances that "road rage" is justified. I sometimes wish I had a "Mad Max" type of vehicle with a big plow/ram mounted on the front.

Way, way back in the distant, dim past of the 1970's I was a small town police officer in NJ. I wrote many a traffic summons to drivers who were putzing along 10, 15, or more miles below the speed limit and who had a long line of traffic backed up behind them. It is called "impeding traffic."

I remember the time back in the 1980's when I lived in Yuma, AZ. The snowbirds flocked to Yuma in the winter. I lived about 3 miles from my work place, yet I could get to work much quicker when I rode my bicycle instead of trying to drive among the snowbirds.

In the 1990's I was head of a special surveillance team. We used unmarked, nondescript cars to follow certain suspects all over the Detroit, MI area. We often had to violate traffic laws ourselves in order to get around or through traffic. Speeding, running through stop signs, passing on the right, whatever it took to keep an eye on our subject. We were given "the bird" by many other drivers that we passed. I, myself, was stopped once by local police for speeding. After I ID'ed myself and explained what we were doing, I was released to continue on my way. Our unit received several commendations for a job well done.

Some of my pet peeves these days are drivers texting or otherwise yaking on their phones, and people who putz along slowly in the center lane of a 4-lane highway. In every State that I've been in, the traffic law states; "Keep to the right except to pass." Exceptions to that are when making a left turn, and also move to the left away from vehicles stopped on the right side of the road.

Okay, I'm done with my rant. No offense intended to anyone. Wink

You're right sometimes folks do operate vehicles in bad weather under stress..., and being an LEO I've escorted folks to the hospital after stopping them for driving like a fool, and finding out the kid was dying of meningitis, etc... but the route we were on wasn't the route to any of the hospitals, and we don't notify folks next of kin from accident locations, so....,
...., and while there may be a "reason" for the stupid actions with the SUV, that's not necessarily an excuse. Especially on that part of the roadway. Now the #1 ER surgeon might need to rush to a hospital, or maybe #1 Obstetrician, but again, not the route to the local hospitals.
Also "road rage" isn't gestures. (I doubt the guy was looking in his mirrors to see me anyway). Road rage is either an illegal maneuver in one's car, or exiting the car for a personal confrontation.

When I was an LEO I did all of the above except for ticketing the pokey drivers.

This afternoon on my way back to TN from Brevard, NC. Hwy 64 near Highlands, NC. Narrow two-lane road with more switch-backs than a broken-backed snake. Rain and fog. Gorge dropping off on one side of the road, rock mountain walls rising up on the other.

Met a semi with a 52' trailer going the other way around a sharp curve. He could not make the turn without crossing the yellow lines. We couldn't see each other around the rock cliff until we were each well into the curve. I was pushed up against the rock wall. Both of us stopped. It was literally inches before contact.

Traffic backed up behind both of us, close, and didn't move. I backed up a couple of feet but could go no further because the angle of the truck cab put it behind me. I was in the angle between the cab and the trailer. He tried to back up but couldn't see the cars behind him.

We blocked traffic for something like 15 or 20 minutes while we each made very slight adjustments in our position. Finally I was able to edge past him.

I know that truck had miles of that road ahead of him, and I would bet he had plenty more problems before he made if off that mountain road.
A big rig like that should not have been on a road like that. There are longer, but better ways around.

And, Dave, I think we disagree, somewhat, on the definition of "road rage". But, that's okay.
There was a fellow in a panel truck stuck in the traffic line 3 or 4 vehicles behind the big rig who was just red faced and continually shouting obscenities and flipping the bird at both of us for blocking the road. That was road rage.

Hey! I have an idea. How 'bout some one find that guy with the emotional problems, and give him a beer. That ought'a fix things, right?
