Haven't seen a discussion of Native American foods like groundnut - Apios tuberosum and Jerusalem artichoke (Sunchokes) - Helianthus tuberosa
I've been eating wildfoods since the late 60's and only found groundnuts about 18 years ago. These foods were definitely part of the diet and quite good if prepared well. |

LEW, if they "cultivated" them then are they still wild?
We can get sunchokes in the local market. They used to eat cattail roots, BUT since the waters that drain into the areas that cattails currently grow are questionable, I don't eat them. There is also the ground cherry, and if you go back in the archives you will find a discussion on ramps. There is a huge bunch of persimmon trees in the public hunting area, that I plan to harvest. Wild rice was way big here in the great lakes regions...taken in trade, fur posts actually counted on it for provisions much like they did pemmican in the west I believe...
