knew an old guy years ago used to make his own copper cups/ skillets and small pots he would get large dia. copper pipe and flat syock and he would then weld the flat stock to the bottom of the pipe sections to make the cups and pots, watched him do it twice. for the skillet he`d just hammer that into shape then weld on the handle. |

John: Perhaps a clarification of terms is first.
"Welding" refers to a specific process that seems a bit much for working copper. "Brazing" is more suited to it, I would think, or even "soldering". Most of the reproduction copper work I see has been high temperature soldered, and certainly not welded. With the right solder one can fabricate all manner of items from common sheet copper. If there is a fellow in your area who is an old time sheet metal worker he can likely give you some good tips on the various ways to join it, as well as shape it. Boone |

Copper and tin are often crimped, then soldered, and today due to market demands, the interior is often tinned. Brazing works just fine, but higher tech than they used, if that matters.

Although it is more complicated and time consuming you could try raising a copper pot or cup, But this would require hammers, stakes, torch for annealing. I made my corn broiler this way. Its about a 6in high copper pot with a steel wire handle and a brass lid. I made it in school so it counted as a project and now i use it all the time.
The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms. |
