Does anyone know the details of the Boone Knife displayed a few years back in BackWoodsman? Or where to find the dimensions for forging one?

Arkansas being the home of the original Bowie knife(s), our museum has an excellent display of some early ones. If dimensions aren't given, I'm sure an e-mail will bring you all the information you need. BTW, the museum curator, Bill Worthen, is one of the country's foremost Bowie experts and has written extensively on the subject.

Here are a couple more examples of "Longknives"

A museum copy I did of a "Virginia Dag" from "Knives of Homespun America"

The bottom is an original longknife in my collection, dug at a 1793 battle site here in Ohio. Above it is the reproduction I did of it.

From what I can tell, that is the original tang, complete. I have seen other examples of this short tang. The knife on the top that I replicated has the same tang and has been in constant use for 4-5 years with no complaints.

Nice knives, Dennis. I really like the first one you posted with the shoulder strap sheath. I like the 1793 knife as well. That short tang looks like it was intended to be driven into an antler haft and was pinned in for extra security. Its worked well for me and I haven't had any problems with short tangs. I'll wager it'll go another 40-50 years if well cared for. I like nice simple working knives like those.

I personally like the long knive's for everyday use and when "on the trail"I no longer use a patch knife and I use a loading block. It was hard to give up the patch kife, used it for years. Here's one I made from an old kitchen knife. Inspired by one Firestarter made for me.
