First off, I think your premise is flawed, the C de B ddin't live off the land as you have set up the problem. They traveled and lived in a region full of native Americans who had cultivated foods of many kinds in addition to wild foods. Food was available. I spent 3 mos camped alone in the desert 45 mi west of Las Vegas back in the summer of 67 [doing geology studies]. Being a true desert, I had to make periodic trips to 'civilization' for water and food. But, I had no way to contact anyone except by driving or hiking over 20 miles [nearest mining camp]. So, I experienced at least some of what a lone pioneer might have experienced--alone in the wilds, no safety nets, no medicines, no cell phones [didn't exist then]. I slept on the ground for 3 mos, no tent. I could have hunted for jackrabbits and lizards and snakes, but didn't have the time. There were wild horses, cougars, wolves, desert bighorn sheep, burros and a few other large animals had I a rifle [I had only a .22 pistol]. Being truly alone is an experience in itself. I think you could do it if you established a base camp with good water and stocked it with meal, rice or flour and dried peas or beans to supplement hunting and fishing. Where I was fishing was not an option and there was no water--an impossible situation without 45 mi trips into town occasionally. You will lose weight. You will start talking to yourself or the rabbits. You had better stay healthy [I was in my early 20s and fit]. This was my longest stay [3 mos], but I have done this many times over my life, that is be out alone in the wilds cut-off from help. I have been lucky and survived all of them...
