What do you guys like in a belt bag? As in what style, size, and thin or thick leather?

The smith with the tongs both worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with the strength of his arms.

What kind of belt bags are you asking about? I have two--one barely large enough to hold ball and patching [no tools or anything else] which I find handy for offhand shoots--the ammo is at hand, the bag is small and out of the way. It is of relatively heavy vege tanned leather lined in raw silk and has a pewter buttoned flap. The other is a bit larger and I use it for the bare minimum stuff I need for deer hunting--a few rounds of ammo and a couple basic tools [jag, ball puller], extra flint. It is medium weight leather with a simple flap latched down with a sinew loop and antler tip. I use shoulder bags most of the time. the small pouch is about 4x5" D shaped and the larger one is about 5x6" D shaped.

I just read a period reference [1750s if I recall] to a belt bag being slung from the breechclout strap--used as a bullet pouch--being 'common' amongst frontier riflemen who dressed like Indians.

it was in a footnote [source cited] in the book American Rifle, a biography, by Rose. I recommend this book--got it for Christmas from my son. First couple chapters are on the 18th cent; then it goes up to the present day discussing the development of the American rifle [largely the military issue weapons from the pre-Rev War through today].
