One of the reasons the plains-lodge is large is to provide room to stand up in while not standing in the fire. Due to its conical shape without verticle walls you are forced toward the center. One solution was the walled Sibley tent, which is similar to a small lodge with walls, and which was intended to have a stove in the center.
Try: Tentsmiths And also look at the "conical" as well as the "pyramid" tents. The pyramids may be set up with two poles outside instead of a single interior pole, and they would cross just above the point and lashed together. The point being secured to them by ties. An opening for smoke, and you could do a fire inside, though I would recommend a brazer for safety and efficiency. LD It's not what you know, it's what you can prove |

coonmt- Just thought I'd add some "shopping tips".
1) Spent many years using a small (10 ft.) tipi. (size is based on diameter of base, not height). Even canoed back in with it. Floated the poles. Used it in ALL conditions shy of heavy winter snow. 2) Have had experience with tipis up to 18 ft. 3) All in all, for a combination of minimum size and adequate space for two plus their gear it is my experience that a 12 ft.'r would be about as small as you would want to go. 4) Remember that tipis are a Plains adapted dwelling. Pole transport in wooded territory can present some logistical problems. Don't count on finding your poles "on site". A good set is not always easy to obtain. 5) You might consider contacting R.K. Lodges to see what they have available. Good Luck! |

Ditto on the 10 footer. Lots of room for 2 and all your shtuff.
I always thought the Cree tipi in Laubin's book (not in all editions) wood be cool. It is wider in relation to its height and is more of a prairie/forest border design. It is 14' IIRC Biziw Nous sommes la nouvelle nation |

I recommend Red Hawk Tradings 12' tipi.
It's made from 12-oz duct canvas (40threads per sq.in.) it's watertight dry. The finish is excellent and comes with six foot dew liner. I have had two and works really good with a small sheet metal stove with pipe up to smoke flaps. I used an old snow shovel to build/contain a center fire. |

I have had the same 14 foot tipi since 1972.
My wife made it with her home sewing machine. The canvas cost a grand total of $30.00 It shows some age and a few repairs. I bought the liner from RK Lodges. I would recommend them. |
