Howdy all. What is the best tent to get. I was thinking of a wedge tent or a diamond shelter. I like having room and being more in the open. Wedge tents seem to be pc for just about anything, but I am a big oaf, so I want some room.

Sawbones,
I have a wedge that is said to be proper British infantry bell-backed tent. It's okay, but it's just barely too short to stand up straight (I'm about 5'11"). Some wall tents are PC fairly early, if you research carefully, and I'd go with one of them next time. I like marquis, too, but they're too spendy and a bit too fancy. Dick "Est Deus in Nobis" |

SAWBONES, I HAD A LOT OF THEM, read the handles...
Tentsmiths builds a great tent. The biggie will be a Mueseum Wedge app. 10X12X8' tall with a Bellon the back.If that is too large for you,you can get the same tent without the bell. hope this helps. Just remember this ,3 poles and a handfull of stakes, the Wedge tent is set up. |

Thanks many lodges, I am looking into that now. The museum wedge looks good, so does the sutler wedge. The museum one is a bit more spendy, but it sure seems like it has pleny of room. Thanks to all who replied

I owned a Tentsmith Museum Wedge. Excellent!!
Get a back door. The bell overlaps in the back and is quite weatherproof. If price is an object look at www.redhawktrading.com wedge. A bell really adds storage area and can be opened if you get a back door for ventilation. |

I have a Tentsmith's Sutler Wedge tent. I just got it in the mail...delay time between ordering and getting is short (within six weeks), considering they make it after you order.
Since I received it the wx has been rainy or snowy and have yet to put it up. So I can't give you a report on how easy the tent is to put up or anything like that. Wish I could tell you more about it. Sparks |

I have a 9X12 wedge and have ablolutly no problen standing up in it. I have to be able to stand up in order to get dressed. If I can't stand up, somebody maight as well call 911. Both my wife and I like the big wedge but it might be too large for a single person.
I know several fellows who have gone for the two small wedges with an awning between the two. This gives you lots of storage and even allows space for a friend to join you. Most of the people I've talked to including my wife prefers the plain door on both ends. the bell doesn't offer that much more space, just get a bigger wedge in the first place. The door on each end offers two advantages. It doesn't matter which end faces where and it offers great air conditioning in the hot weather. Load fast amd aim slow. |

Good to hear, White Finger.
The Sutler Wedge from Tentsmiths is the one with a door on either end, allowing one side to be propped up like a big lean-to with depth. It is so named because the merchants can set their wares out under the canopy and have room in the back for their living gear. Those non-sutler types like us put the living stuff in the back, the table and chairs out under the awning and have friends over to shoot the breeze...at least that's how we plan to use it. Also it makes great shade for Mrs. Stone's period material dyeing demonstrations. If a person wants more privacy, they can hang a tarp between the living gear and the 'porch' from the ridge pole--no need for anything fancy there as one would likely take the privacy cloth down while buttoning up for the night. You have the right idea but we, wife & I use the complete wedge for living and food storage. Cooking and visiting is all done out under a 12' long awning that has a top (naturaly or it wouldn't be a n awning) and a back that has a slope that matches the slope of the wedge. Our tents all use outside poles. We don't care for the inside poles because that pole in the door is just in the way and a pain to put up with.
The doun side of the outside poles is there is a gap between the wedge and the awning so it allows some dampness to hit your hair as you walk between the tent and the awning. This isn't a real big deal but can allow the wet earth between the two area so turn to mud. Just hanging a tarp between areas doesn't allow the type of privacy my wife requires. For some crazy reason she feels that she needs a little more security in knowing people can't see around the cracks. She goes into the tent and ties the door shut when real privacy is needed. Load fast and aim slow. |

whitefinger, you said that your wife wants privacy" HAVE YOU EVER TOLD HER NOT TO STAND BETWEEN THE SIDE WALL OF THE TENT AND THE CANDLE LANTERN"? some times that tent wall
looks like a drivein movie screen". let me say this I HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE SAME RONDOVIO AS YOU AND YOUR WIFE.....LOL |

Many Lodges, I beleive my wife could tell you a thing or two about privacy. I had to send my tent back to its maker to have a better door made for it. The lean-to tent was designed to have the awning dropped at night for a privacy door. I had to have a door added so the awning could stay up and the new door tied down the sides so people couldn't see in around the side gaps. load fast and aim slow.

Let's talk tent ,
A diamond fly is easy to put up , you can have a fire in the front for warmth but in a down pour it gets ugly. All those unauthentic item you might have must be kept in a box or undercover. A one pole tent gives the illusion of space but once you're inside the walls come down on you on the sides taking your space , like unless you're sleeping flat on the ground you lose space. Small wedges are out unless you like crawling around and having lac of space. The tent you use should be persona friendly , like if you are a trapper then a diamond fly would work ect...... I use a monster wedge tent by Panther Primitives 7 high 10 wide and 11.2 long both ends split for coolness in the summer. It goes up quick can be done by one person but 2 is a help. Lots of room you can hang lanterns from the ridge pole ect.... anyway. www.pantherprimitives.com They also have a 6 month layaway with20% down if you need it. The photo I sent is when I first set it up it's not nailed down tight adjusted out like it would be if I were camping. Just to give you an idea how big it is. BTW ,
This is about a 350.00 tent shipping and a 12 inch sod cloth included. They did give me a split back that I didn't ask for. It is an extra charge don't know why that happened but I wasn't going to pay shipping to send it back. MM Load Fast Aim True |

Oh,
I forgot some guys use Baker's tents. This tent takes about 16 poles 2 people at least to put up. I did some checking this tent did not come into play till world war 2. It was the cooks tent. On the flip side many people use it and it has been adopted at many events to be authentic. All depends on how far you want to go. I have owned one it is a pain to transport the poles several 8 to 9 feet then the smaller ones , tie down ropes....... The wedge is by far the best working tent in my opinion did I spell that right ? Anyway 3 poles 2 uprights and 1 ridge and about 12 stakes don't go cheap on the stakes they bend. Load Fast Aim True |

Red Hawk Trading makes Diamonds as big as
16X16 with an 8-foot peak for about $200. Excellent 12-oz numbered duck canvas. I had one and you can put your riding horse and pack mules in there with you. One pole, quick, just a simple effective shelter. |

Whitefinger: You might tell the wife that there is a reason Hollywood has the shapely heroine always retire to white tent with a lantern nice and bright. Those uncolored canvas tents were ndeed, much like movie screens.

Oracle, I have been thinking about one the 16 x 16 diamonds. About how many lbs. is one of those. I have thought about a smaller size, however bigger is always better. Thank you.
