WHAT? No Axe & sharpening stone? With the exception of the water and the blankets (we carried our own on our rucks) that's the basic load-out of a heavy weapons jeep, circa 1987, for Weapons Company, 3rd Battalion 6th Marine Regiment..., 'cept you need an axe & stone.

But what does this have to do with trekking or primitive skills?

I opened a thread on page two of primitive skill
titled Survival Tips, I meant to add the trooper
list to it and put it in the wrong place.
Read the Survival thread and you'll understand
why we include modern methods as well as period.

Sounds pretty much like what I carry in the cab of my pickup except I only carry one shovel and an ax. Instead of a gallon of water, I carry a case of half liter bottles of drinking water and a couple boxes of breakfast bars packaged in aluminized mylar 'cause it's nearly everything proof. In the glove box are two pretty good LED flashlights, a couple of candles and two or three Bic type lighters and a 12v charger for my cellphone. Not ezakly period correct to 1840 but some of that crap has come in mighty handy at Rondy's a time or two and hunting and fishing more times that that.
