How do you guys rig your bed rolls? I got some 10 ounce canvas from Jas Townsend, I treated one side with snow seal and I folded one end, about 2 feet and sewed it up the sides. I have to have my feet jammed in and closed. I have a thin wool blanket on the bottom and a Witney to cover up in on the top. I wish it was a little lighter, but I think it will work. I haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet.
Do any of you yahoos have a picture of your set up?

It depends on the weather--at nearly 64 yrs old I don't rough it as much as I used to. But in nice weather I have a single hand made blanket that is plenty warm--if it is wet outside I'll wrap it in a piece of oilcloth. If it is really cold I'll add a Witney [or two]. I have nearly frozen to death twice and don't plan on it again--I was alot younger then...

For the most part it depends on what time of the year and how far I am going as to the set up. I do have a canvas bag set up like yours big enough to move my feet around in, you need to move your feet or they'll get cold. I use 2 HBC blankets all the time, they are insdie each other opposite to each ones openings. Now if its colder/wet I keep them stuffed in that bag. Or I can stuff that bag with pine needles or such for a pad. Most of the time I just use the 2 blankets in my ticking tarp, lighter, can roll up in that or use it as a shelter.

I would recommend putting two thicknesses of blanket under you for each thickness on top. The ground can pull the warmth out of your bones.

I agree with what Tuscarora and bufflerub 1880 have said. I don't know a thing about period trekking, and have never used a canvas bedroll, but I have spent enough nights outside to have formed an opinion on how I like to do it.

I've found that it doesn't matter how much insulation I have laying on top of me, if I sleep on the bare ground I'll get cold. I can't remember the basic chemistry/science behind how the Earth sucks heat from me, but I know it does it most effectively. Also, I've found that anything water proof wrapped around me will capture the vapor that I create, and I'll get cold. So, knowing those things I make an insulating layer to lay on, and a shelter with some space for air to circulate over me. I stay warm and dry that way.

Coon remember, just because your not equipment rich don't mean you can't live well. I recommend you use your lack of store bought gear as a learning tool. Look around and see whats at hand and figure out how to make it serve your purpose. Use your head and I'll bet you'll make out better than some of the others with much better store bought gear. Write and tell us what worked and what didn't.

Yep thats right the ground is a big ol heat sink, it wants yer body heat. So try to put as much between you and it. The other bad guy is the wind block yer self from it. Thats when a canvas not treated comes in good it will help hold in your body heat in your wool blankets.

CMT, back in your woods you have plenty of rock shelters and deep piles of leaves for insulation. Be sure to dig a hip hole, makes that hard ground much better to lay on. Just lay down where you want yer bed to be mark where yer hip is then dig a hole that is wide enough for your hip an deep enough for it feels comfortable. You wont ever forget to do but once! Enjoy & give us a report!
