Every dang thing I bring is vital and an absolute necessity.
Your mileage, as always, may vary. Three Hawks. |

I guess coffee or tea, either one. I have one of those pressed bricks of tea that I've had for a generation or so--still good! I prefer coffee, but this tea would be easier to mess with.
Then fire kit, blanket and tarp of some kind. You New Mexico guys--I think I know about atole, but tell us about it. Dick "Est Deus in Nobis" |

Atole is corn flour, or masa mixed with hot water or milk. Usually flavored with brown sugar and cinnamon. It can be thin to be used as a hot drink, or thick to be eaten like a cereal. At Christmas, it is traditionally flavored with chocolate. I've had it with fruit or raisins on occasion.
My preference is towards making it with blue corn masa, which to me is sweeter and has a nut like flavor compared to yellow corn. I'm a traditionalist..I prefer Mexican chocolate over others. My wife likes to sweeten hers with brown sugar, but I really like the raw sugar taste of the peloncillos. Blue corn products might be hard to find in some parts of the country. This is where I get mine in Santa Fe. Los Chileros de Nuevo Mexico |

Deercop,
I like blue corn products, too. My parents used to live in Roswell, and my brother lives in San Jose, working in Santa Fe. Sometimes one can find the blue corn meal (not always masa, though) at food co-ops and organic food stores. Dick "Est Deus in Nobis" |

Sparks,
I never lived in Roswell; never actually liked it all that well, but went to visit my folks there. Always enjoyed driving up to Billy the Kid country just west of there, and down to Carlsbad Caverns. The UFO museum etc. wasn't there when my folks were alive. A couple of years ago we went there and saw the museum, though. What a kick! Dick "Est Deus in Nobis" |

Dick, I really like blue corn also. I get mine from a local grower here in northern N.M. thier address is
Casados Farms P.O. Box 852 San Juan Pueblo, N.M. 87566 The farm is along the Rio Grande river. You can get everything in southwest spices from them. Good people. Don't forget the green chile. Heck no, you'er the kind that gives that kind a bad name. Trapper 54cal |

Wow! I didn'r expect this much of a response! It looks like most of us agree that morning coffee is more of a necessity than a luxury! I too, tend to be a bit grumpy without it. In fact, let me tell you a little story. I was at an event with my Lewis and Clark group, when someone started blowing a bugle EARLY in the morning. Not being one to complain, I simply stuck my musket out the door of my tent. I made one slow sweep of the camp, then pulled the musket inside and replaced it with my coffee cup. It wasn't long before I heard someone pour coffee into it and I pulled it back, drank my coffee, and crawled out of bed to greet the day. The moral of this story is twofold. First, wake people in the morning at your own risk! Second, if you want breakfast in bed, carry a big gun!!!

Amusing story, Pvt. Potts. I can see that as a scene from a movie.
