Buck! A rabbit stick is just that,a stick you throw at a rabbit.Pick one up off the ground, test it for weight, lenght and try it by throwing it a few times,if it works for you your in business.I read where the woman of the villages used them to get rabbits and other small animals for food.If you have someone playing off key on a fiddle and you throw it at them, well that's a whole different stick now!!!!!!!See you on the otherside, shinning times are coming.

Buck-I've got some info in a pile of stuff-It deals with mostly Navajo sticks...both "rabbit" sticks and the larger war club...basically, it's a curved stick similar to a boomerang-can be thrown a variety of ways, side arm seems to be fairly common...I've been looking at some scrub oak to build one myself..Have used atl-atls and bolas with some success on small game..if you ever get down to the Durango area, give me a shout,Mitch

I am going to a knap-in at the end of the month. Part of the festivities include rabbit stick blanket throws. It is stated that only traditional sticks will be allowed. No composites or plywood. This lead me to beleive that there was a common pattern to them. It is also stated in the rules that you must bring you're own "stick" to throw no borrowing. Another reason i was looking for a pattern. My plan now is to go/watch and come back with some measurements for next year. I will also try my hand at throwing/ just not in competition.

The true reason for going is to participate in the flint knapping. I went last year and had a grand time. Name of the Doins is ELK MOUNTAIN KNAP IN and primitive skills camp if any are intrested in looking for details. I am sure a google search will produce results.

Mitch,
I do not get to that part of the state much, but as my intrests grow in the hobby and related activities, I am sure I will run into you!

Thanks Kindly,
buck

MY BOOMER....man I can't get that tune outa my head now...dang you Buck!!!!

I just checked out the Elk Mountain site using Mitch's directions. I noticed the guy right about in the middle of the 'Curmudgeons' page holding that rather large 'axe' looking thing thrown over his shoulder. I believe that might be a rabbit stick as well...for some of those giant Jack Rabbits. You know, the ones that breed with Prong Horns to make Jack-A-Lopes.

Good throwing with you rabbit stick Buck. Keep us informed of your adventure.

You know before you hawk a stick at a game animal and successfully harvest it..., you might check the local game regs. Sounds a bit odd, but some states get right upset about taking game using an "unapproved" method. Like the guy who took the rat traps out that he'd modified with a wire lanyard so he could tie them onto a tree limb, then baited them with peanut butter in hopes of quietly getting a few squirrels while hunting deer. Big Grin Well he got the squirrels alright, but they ain't listed on the "fur bearers" list of animals in his state legal for taking by traps. OOOPS Eeker (Hefty fine)

Good point Dave...perhaps Deercop will give us some input from his neck of the desert..I've "hunted" prairie dogs(varmits!!)with an atl-atl,bolas,bow and throwing stick..throwing stick scored one, bow scored two..it ain't as easy as it would seem!! Hadn't thought of the legalities-I do remember a fellow in Arkansas that was fined for spearing a deer(he did kill it)from a tree stand-considered an illegal weapon...but you can hunt hogs with dang near anything..I'm going to check with Colorado DOW about hunting with primitive gear..

Yep it's like noodling a catfish..., it's only legal in four states, but after it was seen on PBS, lots of fellers got nailed in their states for tryin' it near their homes.

Weeeellll!
Am I glad I kept on reading before shooting off my big mouth! I thought you were talking about a smaller version of cross sticks to rest your flinter on whilst firing at a rabbit. I know you don't need one if you're shooting a smoothbore loaded with shot. But if you were shooting one of them tiny .30 calibers you might want to lay down and take careful aim over miniature cross sticks, hhuuuummmmmnnn!
Oh! but then you were talking about a THROWING stick. Ouch, my aching elbow.

I may be off point here, as far as the stick I am going to talk about being PC...I hope the means Period Correct....I read once in Backwoods Mag. about a rabbit stick used in the South by poor folks...I was a straight stick ...I guess as long as wanted...then a steel nut(very large) screwed to the top of it for weight.....it was thrown at the rabbit. I guess a rock on the stick would work if you could attach it well enough.
