In the area I live in Chert is a common stone . It will sparks but I'm not familiar with knapping gun flints. Any thoughts? Best regards,JA

Knapping is easy, just takes practice. There are many books and pampletes on the subject. Just Google 'FLINT KNAPING', something should come up.

You would do well to try to attend a "knap-in" as they are sometimes called. Hands-on instruction will go farther in one day than a month of reading and trial and error on your own. Try a Google search on Florida flint knapping. Here's one site that pops up:
