Hivernant |
I have had this idea that has been gnawing at me for several years. I want to pack up into the mountains in the SC upstate and trek/hunt for a few days (4-5). I intend to do it as a longhunter from the 1770's using equipment, rifle, and clothing that are period correct as close as I can get them. Any suggestions from anyone who has done this?

You need to get some orange clothing in an authentic pattern, in addition to the gear mentioned above. I'd also be wary of pot production and would steer clear of any canabis plants I ran across, putting some distance between me and them. The little plots of the stuff are often protected by booby traps, or even armed outlaws. Some of the old shine running families have youngsters who have switched to mary-j production. Flitlock vs. SKS is not a good scenario.

I live in Montana...
Hmm. Pot fields in Montana in late October. An amusing image. It snowed overnight last night. I'm going out this weekend, and I've been debating wearing period clothes, using blankets and canvas instead of mummy-bag and nylon. I have just gotten over a bad cold, so I think I'll opt for modern stuff this time. I'll have no worries about pot production, but I'll carry bear pepper spray for the Griz. What you are thinking of is what My group calls Aux Ailment Du Pays( aint sure of the spelling at the moment) Means to live off the land, It is one of our requirements for advancement. One thing you might like to do is take a jurnal and write any and thoughts you have on your gear, helps out later on when trying to decide what to take next time

The major difference between Black Bear and Grizzly Bear scats are that Grizzly scats are all sparkly with shiny little bear bells and brightly colored bits of Gore-Tex and reek of pepper spray. Three Hawks This message has been edited. Last edited by: Three Hawks, |

Hey Woods Loper,
A couple weekends ago, I went canoein' with a couple of my friends. I went 1830s, they went 2009s. It had been rainin' for the last week and everythin' was damp. We stopped in a grove of trees and found a spot a little higher were the ground wasn't so mushy and the breeze from the river valley was shielded by the trees. Since I was sleepin' in the open, I cut a bunch of dry grass and folded it in my waxed canvas like a mattress to keep the wet from the ground from soakin' through my buffalo robe and wool blanket, (since I was canoein', I splurged on the sleeping gear). The other two guys, countin' on modern technology, set up their tent and rolled out their bags with plastic under the tent. I spent a glorious night under the stars, comfortable on my grass mattress. My buddies tossed and turned tryin' to avoid the sticks, rocks and rough ground they were tryin' to sleep on. I dressed in layers, and though my feet were constantly cold from my wet mocs, (during the day), I was otherwise quite comfortable. Also, both my companions forgot to bring matches or lighters, and were quite relieved when we stopped to camp that I had flint and steel. So, If I were you, I would go period correct and make yourself at home in the woods. I think if you plan for it, you'll be as comfortable, or more comfortable, than you would in modern equipment. Will Exploit your strengths. Compensate for your weaknesses. |

Well, I hauled both options with me, relying on a pack basket, my canvas tarp, a two-blanket bedroll (and a nylon bag as option B) Thermarest pad, etc. Ended up getting to the area just as dark was setting in. There was snow on the ground, I had way too much stuff having not simply gone with one plan and sticking with it, there were deer tracks in the snow everywhere, no obviously good place to set up my fly... So I wimped out and found a motel nearby. I swear I was the only customer there that mid-week night, too. Since it was not all that cold and thus the snow would be wet, I opted for camo coveralls, a white jacket, blaze orange vest and stocking cap, and hiking boots. Still insisted on wearing pouch, horn, canteen, haversack, and a modern nylon/tubular three-legged stool--In other words, still way too much. I pared down in the afternoon, putting a bullet board and two reload tubes of powder in my camo belt pouch. Scared off a few whitetails, saw a very-distant moose ambling along (I mean several hundred yards away). At about 3 in the afternoon, with cold, wet feet but otherwise very comfy, I saw a doe and a fawn drifting by in perfect range, but I don't like to take a momma away from a youngster, and I thought, "Good, they're starting to come along now...", so I waited. Never saw another deer. Home now, I'll try again later. (I should add that my colonial clothing is mostly city-stuff, and I would have been pretty uncomfortable if I'd worn it.) Three Hawks, I always thought that was a myth. But since I don't own any Goretex, I guess I'm safe in any case. Dick "Est Deus in Nobis" |

Well, great, now I've posted the same message three times. Maybe I should try again! Or maybe this thread will self-correct; I was just editing...
