Some years ago I attended a large rendezvous.
There was a 18' tipi that appeared to be held up by only one pole. I asked to enter and look at this one pole system. The pole started in the back of the lodge and extended foward into a strong pole pocket BETWEEN the smoke flaps. The lodge was staked down as any 18' lodge would be. I have seen a 13' lean-pi but this was a full size 18-footer, 16' high. The pole was large at the bottom and springy towards the top. From the smoke stains in the top of the canvas, this lodge had been used many times for a long time. I found no makers label and the owner bought it from an old couple in Minnesota. Has anyone ever seen a one pole tipi as described. If so who made it? |

There are conical tents, which are a single pole, but have many lines like a marquis, and the original French design of 1753 had no smoke flaps probably not what you mean....,
There are the Sibley tents, which are a variation on the conical, but and he put in smoke flaps at the top..., There is also the pyramid tent.... BUT I think they had a custom made extra tall and wide Sibley, for the basic Sibley from Tentsmiths has smoke flaps like a lodge. They will make custom sizes for you, so try: Sibley Drawing NOTE the smoke flaps with lines in the drawing. Actually it would be cool to set up a wood stove with a single piece of stovepipe, to direct the smoke toward the flaps, thus eliminating the need for all that pipe! LD It's not what you know, it's what you can prove |

Orkle,
RK Lodges is located in Minnesota--maybe they made it as an experiment or custom job. Or maybe the original owners built it. Dick "Est Deus in Nobis" |

Oracle I have a very modern tent that is probably similer in desighn to the tipi you saw. The perimeter is staked down every couple of feet and then a center support pole is inserted. Very stable in high winds, and very simple to set up.

Is your lodge 18-feet in diameter and have two smoke flaps like a regular TIPI? You probably have a TentMasters Lean-pi 13-feet in diameter. This wasn't a lean-pi or sidley but a unique one of the kind one pole lodge. The pole bent like a spring to keep tention on the canvas cover. Oracle all i say by it's very nature is true. |
