Baker rifles, AFAIK, used thin leather patches cut in a cross shape and somehow stuck to the ball. These were then put into the paper cartridges. Seen a picture of this somewhere, but can't remember where.

I have not tried this, but I once saw an original longrifle with two paper cartridges laying side by side in the "patchbox". My assumption was [and is] that the hunter would load normally the 1st shot with horn powder and lubed, patched ball. Then if fast follow-up shots were needed the paper cartridges would allow quick reloads and be more accurate than the commonly mentioned bare ball loads.

I only wish I had come up with the idea of the tapered cartridge. The ones I have used were not tapered, but were loaded, paper wrapped ball, and all, just like the tapered cartridges. I did not find a fired cartridge, but never really looked for one. Might have to make a few and see if there is any difference in my old style cartridges and the tapered ones. As to the Jeagers, I can't say. Chris Immel, aka Stophel, might have the information you are looking for...or know where you might find it. God bless |
