Perhaps one of the better known "grunts" from the returned Corps was John Colter.
His discription of a place which became known as Colters Hell became a famous national park. Which one ? Sorry no prizes for the winner. Shoot low,they may be crawling. |

Shucks even I knew that one! I read the Ambrose Lewis and Clark book and then went right out and got a book on Colter. Better make yer questions a bit harder if you plan on stumpin this crowd! We got a bunch of edumacted folks around here! buck |

Not trying to stir anything up but I heard that "Coulter's Hell" was actually some 17 to 20 mi outside of "Rouche Juane" (Yellowstone) I have a book that tells where it is but I'm at work now and so I won't be able to look it up until tomorrow.

I read the same thing...that there is/ was some debate about where Coulter actually was...I have a little book on the subject printed in the late 60s I think...I'll also post more from it when I get home and can pull it off the shelf...

I've read where some scholars now believe it was an area near Thermopolis, Wyoming. At that time, there was geo-thermal activity in the area.
